Industry NewsSkyDrive advances toward type certification with Japanese regulator agreement
SkyDrive, a Japan-based eVTOL aircraft manufacturer, has secured a critical regulatory milestone after reaching agreement with Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) on its General Certification Plan for the SKYDRIVE Model SD-05, according to AeroMorning.
The 9 March 2026 announcement from the company's Toyota, Aichi facility confirms alignment between manufacturer and regulator on demonstrating aircraft safety compliance.
The certification plan establishes the framework for proving the aircraft meets all legal safety requirements, outlining collaborative processes between SkyDrive and JCAB throughout the approval pathway.
Securing this agreement substantially reduces future certification risk by confirming both parties agree on the methodology for validating aircraft safety performance.
Type certification requires regulatory approval across multiple technical domains beyond the general plan.
SkyDrive has submitted additional certification plans covering structure, systems, electric motors, and noise performance to JCAB, which are currently under evaluation.
Once all plans receive approval, compliance testing can commence, representing entry into what the company describes as the final development phase.
The certification process comprises six distinct steps. SkyDrive has completed its certification application and achieved full agreement on the certification basis defining applicable regulations.
The company reports 95 per cent completion on means of compliance, which establishes how regulations will be satisfied through testing, simulation, or operational validation. Certification planning, detailing specific test execution methodology, stands at 50 per cent completion.
Arnaud Coville, Chief Technology Officer at SkyDrive, stated: "Reaching agreement with JCAB on the General Certification Plan represents an extremely significant milestone for SkyDrive. The agreement, which shortens the projected timeline for compliance activities and reduces future risk, shows that we are on the right track for the certification of our Aircraft with the JCAB and FAA."
The company targets commercial operations in 2028, with JCAB certification preceding United States FAA approval efforts undertaken in coordination with Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
