Sri Lankan national carrier SriLankan Airlines has reimplemented Lufthansa Systems' Lido Flight 4D flight planning solution, returning to the German aviation technology provider after identifying operational limitations with an alternative platform adopted following an initial partnership that began in 2014.

According to Aviation Business News, the Lido Flight 4D platform uses route, weather, airspace and aircraft performance data to support dispatchers in making data-driven operational decisions. The airline said its decision to return was influenced by requirements around system reliability, route optimisation and dispatcher workflow efficiency.

Capt. Patrick Fernando, chief technical officer at SriLankan Airlines, said the return to Lido Flight 4D allowed the carrier to build on a proven foundation. "Our objective was to regain system stability and improve route optimisation accuracy across our network. Lido Flight 4D provides the capabilities we need to optimise our flight operations and respond effectively to changing market conditions," he said.

Chamara Perera, group head of information technology at SriLankan Airlines, described the implementation as a central element of the airline's broader digital transformation strategy. "Lido Flight Planning plays a key role in our digital transformation, enabling a shift from manual processes to an automated, data-driven, integrated, and real-time operational ecosystem with a strong focus on sustainability," he said.

Ashish Ahuja, vice president of sales and client management for the Indian subcontinent at Lufthansa Systems Asia Pacific, said reactivating established configurations and interfaces had significantly reduced the project timeline. "By reactivating established configurations and interfaces, the project timeline has been reduced significantly, ensuring operational continuity while restoring full functionality," he said.

The implementation is expected to strengthen SriLankan Airlines' flight planning framework and support long-term improvements in fuel efficiency, operational reliability and decision-making processes across its international network.

Flight planning technology has become an increasingly critical operational investment for airlines seeking to manage fuel costs, which typically account for 20–25% of total operating expenses across the industry. Advanced platforms that integrate real-time weather, airspace restrictions and aircraft performance modelling enable carriers to identify more fuel-efficient routings and reduce discretionary fuel uplift, delivering measurable cost savings across high-frequency international operations.

SriLankan Airlines operates a fleet of Airbus narrowbody and widebody aircraft from its Colombo hub, serving destinations across Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Australia.
