Boeing moves closer to full control of Belfast plant

Boeing is set to take over the non-Airbus operations at Spirit AeroSystems’ Belfast site as part of its $4.7 billion reacquisition deal. With other buyers unlikely to emerge, Boeing will soon control Northern Ireland’s largest manufacturing complex, which also supplies Bombardier. The move follows Airbus finalising its purchase of Spirit sites supporting its own aircraft programs earlier this year.

Boeing spun off Spirit in 2005 but is now bringing it back into the fold to tighten safety and quality standards after recent production and reputational challenges. The Belfast acquisition underscores Boeing’s push to secure supply chain stability and protect critical programmes from competitor influence.
