Bristow Ireland, part of Bristow Group Inc., has provided further details on the AW189 helicopter now operating for the Irish Coastguard’s Rescue 118 service out of Sligo Airport.

The update underscores the aircraft’s capabilities in high-demand search and rescue (SAR) operations, including over the Christmas period.

The AW189 is designed to maintain a high level of safety during critical flight phases such as hoisting operations or approaches to elevated helipads. The helicopter is equipped with a modern weather radar, a highly capable search camera, and a full aircraft anti-icing system, enabling crews to operate safely day and night in all weather conditions.

The aircraft’s compact footprint improves accessibility to challenging incident locations, reducing response times for distressed individuals. Inside, the cabin meets or exceeds all Irish Coastguard requirements, allowing it to carry all necessary rescue equipment. The AW189’s twin sliding doors permit safe and rapid loading and unloading of passengers and patients from either side, avoiding the hazardous tail area.

As part of Ireland’s integrated SAR network, the AW189 fleet works in coordination with fixed-wing aircraft, enhancing operational reach and interoperability under Coastguard tasking authority.

Full in-country maintenance and support teams ensure the aircraft and specialist crews remain at peak readiness. Bristow’s globally recognised Target Zero safety culture underpins all operational activities, reinforcing its commitment to reliability and crew safety.

The deployment of the AW189 is set to improve Ireland’s SAR response times, operational efficiency, and safety standards across national and international missions.
