Ethiopian Airlines orders nine Boeing 787 Dreamliners to expand network
Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, has placed an order for nine Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft as it expands its long-haul operations.
The airline plans to use the 787-9 jets to enhance service across 145 international destinations.
The order follows a previous commitment to 11 Boeing 737 MAX jets announced at the Dubai Airshow, bringing Ethiopian Airlines’ total Boeing order book to 20 aircraft. The 787s, valued at approximately USD2.7 billion (€2.3bn), are intended to strengthen both passenger and cargo capabilities.
Mesfin Tasew, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, said, “We are pleased to confirm the order for nine Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to further expand our existing fleet. This order underscores our continued commitment to enhancing our fleet with modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, thereby further strengthening our customer service.” He added, “We will continue to acquire more aircraft and adopt the latest technologies as part of our strategic vision to advance sustainable aviation.”
Ethiopian Airlines operates Africa’s largest 787 Dreamliner fleet, flying the 787-8 and 787-9 across intercontinental routes to Europe, Asia, North America, and key intra-African corridors. The 787 Dreamliner reduces fuel consumption and emissions by 25% compared to the aircraft it replaces, allowing efficient passenger and cargo operations on high-demand routes.
Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing vice president of commercial sales and marketing for Africa, said, “The 787 Dreamliner family has proven to be a game-changer for airlines around the world, and we are proud to support Ethiopian Airlines in their mission to connect Africa with the global community. Together, we look forward to shaping the future of air travel with advanced, efficient and comfortable airplanes to serve their passengers.”
