Irish aviation veteran Willie Walsh is to become chief executive of IndiGo, one of India's largest low-cost carriers, no later than 3 August 2026, marking a significant shift from his role as director general of the International Air Transport Association.

According to Forbes India, Walsh's IATA tenure concludes on 31 July, with his appointment signalling a transition from industry advocacy to operational leadership at a cost-focused carrier navigating a complex regulatory and supply chain environment.

Walsh brings more than four decades of aviation experience to the role. He began his career as a cadet pilot at Aer Lingus in 1979, rising to become CEO of the Irish carrier in 2001, where he restructured its operating model along low-cost lines. He subsequently served as CEO of British Airways from 2005, steering the airline through the 2008–09 financial crisis before overseeing its merger with Iberia to form International Airlines Group, which he led until September 2020.

The appointment drew an immediate market response, with IndiGo's shares rising approximately 8% the day after the announcement was made.

Walsh has previously been publicly critical of India's aviation taxation framework and delays in granting bilateral flying rights — positions he will now need to navigate from the other side of the table.

Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Walsh said IndiGo was extremely well-positioned to be at the forefront of a rapidly evolving aviation landscape.

Ashish Chhawchharia, partner and aviation industry leader at Grant Thornton Bharat, said the appointment signals a decisive shift in strategy, pointing to Walsh's track record in tightening efficiency and accelerating international expansion.
